蜂蜜色をした可愛らしい色合いから『ハニーストーン』とも呼ばれるアラゴナイトは、スペインのアラゴン地方から発見されたことにちなんで命名された、カルサイトと同じ成分の鉱物です。斜方晶に結晶し、珊瑚状や霰状に産出されることから、日本では『霰石』とも呼ばれています。 蜂蜜のような淡い黄色の他に、白色やオレンジ色、淡紫色、水色などがあり、中でもブルーアラゴナイトは、最近人気のある石のひとつです。柔らかく加工がしやすいため、古代メソポタミアのシュメール人たちは、アラゴナイトで作った円筒のものに絵を刻み、印章として使用していたといわれています。カルシウムを含んでいるので、酸に弱く水や塩による浄化は不向きな石です。
