寛政9〜安政5年(1797〜1858)、火消し同心の家職を好まず、歌川豊広の門人となり浮世絵界に入る。初めは美人画や役者絵を描いたが、風景画で名声を得て、風景版画の第一人者となった。花鳥画や肉筆画の作品も残す。代表作は『東海道五十三次』『東都名所』『近江八景』。
