Upopoi (symbolic space for ethnic coexistence)* Commemorating the opening of the National Museum of the Ainu People

Living with Kamui

An Ainu hymn dedicated to the great nature of Hokkaido. Let's sing together and dance together.

The Ainu people and indigenous people are now attracting attention from all over the world.

This year, Upopoi (a symbolic space for the coexistence of ethnic groups) will open in Shiraoi, Hokkaido*, where the first national Ainu people's museum will be established on the premises. In the publishing world, the manga series "Golden Kamuy," starring an Ainu girl as the main character, has sold more than 10 million copies and has been made into an animation.

This book was compiled with the support of people who protect Ainu culture in various regions. It is composed of photographs taken by photographer* Akihiko Horiuchi, who traveled all over Hokkaido, capturing the Ainu praying and dancing to the Kamui in the great outdoors.

Contributing writers include Masahiro Nomoto, director of the former Ainu Folk Museum in Shiraoi, who founded Upopoi; Maki Sekine, who continues to preserve traditional Ainu crafts in Nibutani, Hiratori Town; and Shusei Toko, stage director of Lost Kamuy, which presents ancient Ainu dance with new digital expression at the Akan Theater (Ikkoㇿ).

The show conveys the true image of the Ainu people who are trying their best to preserve Ainu culture in the modern age.
