This year, Upopoi (a symbolic space for the coexistence of ethnic groups) will open in Shiraoi, Hokkaido*, where the first national Ainu people's museum will be established on the premises. In the publishing world, the manga series "Golden Kamuy," starring an Ainu girl as the main character, has sold more than 10 million copies and has been made into an animation. This book was compiled with the support of people who protect Ainu culture in various regions. It is composed of photographs taken by photographer* Akihiko Horiuchi, who traveled all over Hokkaido, capturing the Ainu praying and dancing to the Kamui in the great outdoors. Contributing writers include Masahiro Nomoto, director of the former Ainu Folk Museum in Shiraoi, who founded Upopoi; Maki Sekine, who continues to preserve traditional Ainu crafts in Nibutani, Hiratori Town; and Shusei Toko, stage director of Lost Kamuy, which presents ancient Ainu dance with new digital expression at the Akan Theater (Ikkoㇿ). 北海道の大自然に捧げるアイヌの賛歌。ともに歌い、みんなで踊ろう。
今、全世界からアイヌ民族、先住民族は注目されている。
今年、初めての国立アイヌ民族博物館を敷地内に創設するウポポイ(民族共生象徴空間)が北海道・白老に開業する。出版界でもアイヌの少女を主役にした漫画「ゴールデンカムイ」はシリーズ累計1,000万部を突破、アニメーション化されている。
本書は、各地でアイヌ文化を守る方々のサポートを受けて編集された。写真家・堀内昭彦が北海道をくまなく巡り、大自然の中でカムイに祈りと舞を捧げる姿を捉えた写真で構成。
寄稿はウポポイ創設を地元白老で担う旧アイヌ民族博物館館長・野本正博、平取町二風谷でアイヌ伝統工芸を今に伝える関根真紀、阿寒シアター〈イコㇿ〉でアイヌの古式舞踊を新たなデジタル表現とともに発信する「ロストカムイ」舞台監督・床州生。
現代においてアイヌ文化を守るため、懸命に生きるアイヌの真の姿を伝える。
