Description
A collection of photographs of sacred treasures excavated from the World Heritage Site of [[God's Island] Munakata* Okinoshima Island and Related Properties]. Okinoshima Island, about 60 km from mainland Kyushu, and its related heritage sites are remarkable testimony to a cultural tradition of worship of the sacred island that has developed and been passed down from ancient times to the present. The Okinoshima Island has preserved the remains of ancient rituals related to safety of navigation, which continued from the late 4th century to the end of the 9th century, as a result of active exchanges among the countries of the Japanese archipelago, the Korean peninsula, and mainland China. The Munakata clan, a powerful ancient clan, fostered the belief in the three Munakata goddesses out of faith in the deity that resided on Okinoshima. In 2017, Munakata* Okinoshima Island and Related Properties was registered as a World Heritage Site. 80,000 objects (national treasures) dedicated to state rituals on Okinoshima Island, which were conducted from the 4th to 9th centuries, are not only of historical value but also beautifully prepared in every detail, including the design of each object, allowing visitors to feel the skills, culture and respect of ancient people. The 80,000 objects (national treasures) are of great historical value. This book is a collection of beautiful photographs dedicated to the gods taken by Zentaro Yamamura, a photographer who has photographed stone gods (iwakura) throughout Japan, of the treasures of Okinoshima Island in the collection of the Munakata Taisha Shrine Treasury. *Bilingual (English and Japanese) *Japanese/English Planning*Supervision/Munakata Taisha Photo/Yamamura Zentaro |
