A world of beauty woven by great actors and masterpieces.

It is the ultimate in luxury to see masterpieces from the worlds of Kabuki and Japanese painting by eminent artists of their predecessors lined up like this.

-- Reiichi Tsuchiya (Vice President, Nitten)

This book introduces the relationship between Japanese painting and Kabuki, and the art of the masters who contributed to the development of culture and made great achievements in postwar Japan, Japanese beauty that should be preserved for future generations.

At the suggestion of architect Gojuya Yoshida, who was involved in the reconstruction and renovation of the Kabuki-za Theater and the old Meiji-za Theater after the war, masterpieces by the masters of modern Japanese art were displayed all together in both theaters. Known as "intermission museums," they have played an important role as symbols of beauty and emotion in both theaters. Even today, these masterpieces remain on display for the enjoyment of theater-goers.

In particular, Kaii Higashiyama, Yomogiharu Yamaguchi, and Meiji Hashimoto have deep ties to Kabuki, and they wrote the calligraphy for the costumes (uchikake) of onnagata* Nakamura Utaemon VI, with whom they had a close friendship, and created the original drawings for the cover of the plot book and the original draperies for the rugs. Also on view for the first time are the materials of Hashimoto Meiji's art supervision of stage decorations and costumes.

In addition to the connection between Japanese-style painters and Kabuki, the exhibition also introduces the 80-piece Japanese art collection of the Kabuki-za and Meiji-za theaters. This is a valuable volume that introduces for the first time the art collections of both theaters, which can be considered a competition of beauty.

This book is a collection of works published in conjunction with an exhibition commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Higashiyama Kaii Memorial Museum in Ichikawa City, with special cooperation from Shochiku, Kabuki-za, and Meiji-za.
