Description
Approaching the True Image [Real] of "Human" Kumagai Moriichi, Not a "Hermit Kumagai Shoichi (1880-1977) was a painter for over 70 years, and his life spanning the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. His painting style [Morikazu style], characterized by simple forms and clear colors, is still new and continues to attract people. On the other hand, his distinctive appearance, selfless personality, and stories passed down from generation to generation have given rise to the image of him as a "hermit of the art world" or a "painter of the supermundane," an image that is sometimes confused with an appreciation of his work itself. In this book, therefore, we will reevaluate the true image of the painter Moichi Kumagai as a "human being" rather than a "hermit" Kumagai, and how he lived his life and dealt with his paintings. The book contains about 200 oil paintings, Japanese-style paintings, and books, including his masterpieces that are indispensable for tracing his career, as well as recently discovered masterpieces, along with a substantial "Commentary on Works," a highly readable "Chronological Biography," and "Essays" from various fields. [This is the official catalog and book of the exhibition "140th Anniversary of Kumagai's Birth: Moriichi Kumagai, I am I".
