Description
A book that Japanese people should see now, a new collection of old photographs. Foreign photographers who visited Japan shortly after the country opened to the outside world were restricted in terms of residence and movement, and had no familiarity with the land due to the lack of convenient transportation. The driving force behind their journey must have been their impressions of the miraculous beauty of nature and kind-hearted people spread out before their eyes. The people who lived modestly in harmony with nature, the towns that still had the scent of Edo, and the expressions and customs of the people of the city were all captured by the photographers. In this book, the British photographer Beato and the Austrian Stillfried, whose talent has been handed down to posterity and had a great influence on Japan, are the main subjects, along with about 388 photographs carefully selected from the enormous collection collected by the old photo collector Shinnosuke Kamijo over a quarter of a century. The book is available for purchase. The beauty of vintage prints and glass dry plates, the realistic appearance of people reflected in stereo photographs, towns, and nature can be fully appreciated on A4-size paper. The usual reference books tend to cram too many illustrations onto a single page, making it difficult to appreciate the beauty of each individual photograph, as it is difficult to see the unexpected highlights in the corners of each image. This book makes full use of fine art printing techniques, and its large format and spacious arrangement of photographs allows the viewer to appreciate every interesting corner of the works. It is an astonishing collection of rare photographs, many of which have never been seen before in the world.
