Zabuton is derived from tatami mats. Ancient tatami mats served as both bedding and seating, and were an expression of status and authority. The seating part of the tatami developed into the prototype of the zabuton, the shitone.
In the Kamakura period (1185-1333), with the resumption of cotton imports and improvements in production technology, people began to use cloth for the side, and by the middle of the Edo period (1603-1867), it took on almost its present form with cotton inside the fabric. However, it was not until the Taisho period (1912-1926) that it became popular among the general public.
