"It was two ghostly leaves that wrapped around my lonely heart.
Two ghostly leaves wrapped around my lonely heart."

This is a story about a 5 year old boy [Boku] who lost his mother.
He meets and talks with two leaves that live for 2000 years, and grows up.

His father, who doesn't believe in the existence of plants, says, "Aren't you a fossil? The boy imagines a prehistoric world.
The boy imagines a prehistoric world, and he develops the hope that his mother will eventually become a fossil and come back to see him again.

The name of the plant is Ueluwitchia, also known as the "Kissoutengai.
It is a rare plant that grows wild only in the Namib Desert in Africa.
It is sometimes called "bizarre" because there is no other plant that grows two leaves in a long time. Few young individuals of the Welwitschia have been found, and botanical gardens around the world are attempting to keep the species alive by cultivating it.

*The Josai University Medicinal Botanical Garden (Sakado City, Saitama Prefecture), where this book was written, exhibits several species of plants in danger of extinction, including Welwitschia. They are making efforts to preserve the species.
