He graduated from the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine in 1986, and conducted research at the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London in 1994. After working as a lecturer at the Department of Psychiatry, Teikyo University School of Medicine in 1998, he has been in his current position since 2002. He is also a visiting professor at Waseda University and University of Yamanashi, and a collaborating professor at Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Tohoku University. He is a Doctor of Medicine, a designated mental health physician, an advisor to the Japanese Society of Neuropsychiatry, and an advisor to the Japanese Society of Clinical Nutrition.
