Description
| Yoshinori Mizutani continuously captures ordinary, everyday scenes with his unique perspective. This new work, a sequel to his previous work "Tokyo Parrots," which made him a household name, follows the abnormal breeding of river cormorants in the suburbs of Tokyo, The new work is a departure from Mizutani's previous works, which were impressive for their vivid colors, and is expressed in monotone tones of black and white, like a black-and-white photograph, although it is in color. The urban landscape, singularized by the presence of birds, is cut out in Mizutani's signature graphical composition, transforming it into a two-dimensional world in which the viewer loses a sense of perspective. The flocks of birds occupying the power lines in the Tokyo sky are silhouetted like musical notes on a sheet of music. In this photo book, I likened this score-like image to a French piano instruction book [Hanon]. [The scene of the river cormorants swarming in the city, out of balance with their surroundings, is a kind of wake-up call to modern society. At the same time, however, the black birds seem to be playing a beautiful melody in the sky like a musical score.] -Yoshinori Mizutani |
