What is Kyoyaki* Kiyomizuyaki?

Kiyomizu-yaki is one of Kyoto's representative traditional crafts, and was originally called Kiyomizu-yaki to refer to the pottery produced in the Kiyomizu-zaka area, which faces Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Today, Kiyomizu-yaki is a term used to refer to all pottery produced in the Kiyomizu-yaki complex in Higashiyama-ku, Yamashina-ku, Kyoto City, and Sumiyama in Uji City. The official name of Kiyomizuyaki as a traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry is [Kyo-yaki* Kiyomizu-yaki].

The difference between Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki is that in the past (around the Edo period), in addition to Kiyomizu-yaki, there were Awataguchi-yaki, Yasaka-yaki, Otowa-yaki, Gobosatsuke-yaki, etc. in various parts of Kyoto City, and the term "Kyo-yaki" was used collectively for these.

However, as time went by, only Kiyomizu-yaki remained, and today the term "Kiyomizu-yaki" is almost synonymous with "Kyo-yaki.
