The first edition sold out by pre-order only, and in less than two years became a bestseller with over 50,000 copies sold. The book became a series of Peter Rabbit picture books featuring many characters, and even now, more than 100 years later, it continues to be read around the world, and Peter, the main character, continues to be loved by people all over the world. |

◆ピーターラビットのおはなし◆
このおはなしのきっかけは、1893年9月に作者、ビアトリクス・ポターTMが友人の息子である、5歳のノエル君に宛てて書いた絵手紙でした。
物語の舞台はイギリスの田舎の農園。
いたずら好きのうさぎのピーターがマグレガーさんの庭に入りこんでレタスをたべていると、彼に見つかってしまいます。
マグレガーさんに追われ逃げるピーター、果たして彼はどうなってしまうのでしょう。
後にビアトリクスはこのお話を絵本にしたいと考え1901年250部の自費出版を経て、翌年1902年10月に全ての絵に色を付け、フレデリック・ウォーン社から『ピーターラビットのおはなし』TMとして刊行されます。
すると初版は予約のみで完売、2年足らずの間に5万部を超えるベストセラーとなりました。
その後、多くのキャラクターが登場する、ピーターラビットの絵本シリーズとなったこの作品は100年以上たった今でも、世界中で読み継がれ、主人公のピーターも世界中の人々に愛され続けています。
