漫画家。1967年鹿児島県生まれ。88年「楓パープル」でデビュー。90?96年『SLAM DUNK』を『少年ジャンプ』で連載。98年より『モーニング』で『バガボンド』を、99年より『週刊ヤングジャンプ』で『リアル』を連載中。2008?10年、上野の森美術館ほかで「最後のマンガ展」を開催。09年、東京都現代美術館にて「エントランス・スペース・プロジェクト《ガシュウ君とぼく》」を手がける。11年、京都・東本願寺より依頼された屏風「親鸞」を制作。手塚治虫文化賞マンガ大賞、文化庁芸術選奨新人賞ほか受賞多数。
