The Michinoku Aizu papier-mâché dolls have a 400-year history.
The body of the papier-mâché doll is removed from the mold and covered with several layers of Japanese paper, then coated with a base coat of powdered shells and gofun, a paste made from powdered shells and nikawashi, and then coated with a top coat of nikawashi dissolved in dye.
