At first, the technique of Sue pottery was introduced from the Korean Peninsula. In the Heian period (10th century), pottery with ash glaze called white porcelain began to be baked. This white porcelain is an improved version of Sue porcelain that uses glaze. Around this time, the number of kilns increased, and it became a full-fledged pottery production area. From the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the beginning of the Edo period, along with the popularity of tea ceremony, pottery that reflected the tastes of tea masters was produced. |

美濃焼の歴史は古く、今から1300年以上前まで遡ります。最初は朝鮮半島から須恵器の技術が伝えられました。平安時代(10世紀)になると白瓷(しらし)と言われる灰釉(かいゆう)を施した陶器が焼かれるようになりました。
この白瓷は須恵器を改良し、釉薬(ゆうやく)を使ったものです。この頃から窯の数も多くなり、本格的な焼き物生産地となりました。安土桃山時代から江戸時代初頭にかけて、茶の湯の流行とともに、茶人の好みを反映した焼き物が生産されました。
