Description
Osamu Tezuka, the god of manga*, will celebrate the 90th anniversary of his birth in 2018. This is a collection of Tezuka's works, including only his door pictures, from the 150,000 manga manuscripts he is said to have drawn during his lifetime. It is a rare and valuable source of information, and at the same time, it allows the reader to appreciate Tezuka's works as art. This book, the second part of a two-volume series, contains Tezuka's works from the 1970s, when he reached his maturity as a manga artist, to 1989, when he sadly passed away. The door pictures that appear at the beginning of each serialized manga or book, along with the title, are another concentrated attraction of Tezuka's works, as they are boldly composed to catch the reader's attention. In particular, most of the door pictures from the magazine serialization are cut from the book, so many of them are included in this book for the first time. Also included in this book are the door paintings from the book, which are now out of print and difficult to obtain. The book contains approximately 850 works carefully selected from more than 2,000 candidate works, focusing on those for which the original drawings are still extant. Unlike recent manga reprints that have been extensively cleaned, the corrections have been kept to a minimum, and even the blemishes, correction marks, and discoloration due to aging have been preserved as "texture," and the black-and-white manuscripts are presented in full color. This allows the reader to enjoy the history of the work as well as the delicate brushwork and breath of the artist, which is the true appeal of the original artwork. At the end of the book are interviews with Tezuka Osamu's former manager and the person responsible for managing the valuable original art materials of Tezuka's works. The testimonies of those involved shed light on Tezuka's work and his thoughts on the door pictures. This book is a must-have, along with the previously published "Tezuka Osamu Door Painting Collection 1950-1970," which includes Tezuka's works from the early to mid-1970s. |
