Amabie is a half-human, half-fish monster that has been passed down in the sea of Higo Province (Kumamoto Prefecture) since the Edo period (1603-1868), and is said to be beneficial in preventing plague and disease.
Yakushigama's amabie are prayed for good health at the Shioji Shrine located in Nagasu-cho, Kumamoto Prefecture, facing the Ariake Sea, which is famous for its "tachibakai" (a ritual to ward off evil spirits), and a certificate of protection is affixed to the back as proof.
