Description
Noriyoshi Iyori, the legendary illustrator/painter who created the posters for [Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back] and the [Godzilla] series, and who will have a solo exhibition at the Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo in January 2018, is said to have devoted his last years of life to creating more than 272 paintings of former Japanese Navy vessels. This is a collection of more than 272 paintings of former Japanese naval vessels. [From battleships such as the Yamato, Musashi, and Fuso to aircraft carriers such as the Akagi, Kaga, and Shinano, cruisers, destroyers, and auxiliary vessels known as gunboats* or "sea defense ships," the drawings, which are based on plans and drawn at the same scale (1/300), are both astoundingly precise and tranquil in their beauty. These manuscripts were drawn in his spare time from work to satisfy his own extremely pure desire to paint, and had been lying dormant in his studio for a long time. This collection will be the first time that these manuscripts will be exhibited to the public, and will be a rare opportunity for viewers to appreciate the work of Noriyoshi Iyori outside of his professional life. The book includes almost all of the Japanese naval vessels from the vast number of works in the collection (as there may be some that have yet to be discovered), and the 272 naval paintings provide a glimpse of the entire fleet, and the same scale makes it possible to compare sizes of different vessels, making the book highly valuable as a reference work. In addition, as an appendix to the art book, 16 sheets of original reproductions of selected paintings from the covers of the Senki*Senshi library published by Asahi Sonorama and Ushio Shobo Kohinsha (a series of military history books depicting naval battles such as the Sino-Japanese*Japanese War, attack on Pearl Harbor, Battle of Leyte and sinking of Yamato) are included in the luxury edition. *Although the character [Rai] is originally an old Kanji character, this introductory page uses the normal Kanji character for display considerations. |
