[What is block printing? As the word suggests, block printing is a technique in which a pattern is carved into a block of wood, a plate is made, and the plate is pressed onto the cloth to dye it with the pattern. The states of Rajasthan and Gujarat are famous for the production of block prints. There are several villages near Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, that specialize in block printing, and each has its own techniques and patterns, but they all use the same woodblocks made of sheesham (Indian rosewood) or teak. The woodblocks are made by expert carvers, and the lines of the block prints made by skilled craftsmen can continue to be used clearly for 50 years. The charm of block prints is born from the delicate relationship with nature and the unique flavor of the handmade work, which begins with the making of the woodblocks. This is because the tint of the dye changes slightly according to temperature, humidity, and hours of sunlight. In block printing, a wooden plate is made for each color, and the colors are layered like stamps, washed many times, and dried in the sun each time. This process is carried out by hand, in accordance with the changes of nature as time ticks by. The subtle differences that may appear to the eye accustomed to uniformity and sameness are a characteristic of handwork, and perhaps it is the beauty of this unpredictable harmony that continues to fascinate us to this day, as woodblock dyeing has a history dating back to BC. Each color is reversible. /2021 fall/winter |
