Kakunodate, Senboku City, Akita Prefecture, is beautiful with its historic samurai residences and rows of cherry blossom trees. Kabazaiku is a traditional craft that has been handed down here since the Edo period. Kabazaiku is made from the bark of wild mountain cherry trees, and was popularized at the end of the 18th century as a handicraft of samurai warriors under the patronage of the lord of the Satake Kitake family castle. Kabazaiku, which is made by shaving the bark into thin strips and attaching them to the wood with a trowel, is said to be one of the world's unique bark crafts, and Kakunodate is the only place in Japan where this technique is still practiced. There are about 12 types of bark, including ame-bark, chirashi-bark, and hibi-bark. Because of its smoothness and toughness, as well as its ability to avoid moisture and prevent drying, it was used for medicine baskets and tobacco containers in ancient times and is now widely used for tea canisters, trays, and other daily commodities. [Tomioka Shoten] produces modern Kaba-zaiku (wild cherry bark work) by adding design elements to this traditional craft while maintaining its traditional qualities in order to infuse it with a modern air. A plain leather tea caddy that turns a deep amber color and develops a luster as it is used more and more. The surface, inside, and lid of this tea caddy are all made of cherry bark. The cherry bark on the surface of the tea caddy is dried for a long period of time, then scraped until it becomes thin and polished to a glossy finish. The natural patterns of the trunks of the trees appear on the surface, giving each canister a different appearance. The canister is also airtight due to the careful handiwork of our craftsmen, making it ideal for storing delicate tea leaves.
