Mashiko Pottery, which has been produced since the end of the Edo period, is a folk art pottery with a thick and rustic appeal, made of clay from the area around the town of Mashiko, located in southeastern Tochigi Prefecture. The basic glazes used in Mashiko ware are jet black, a reddish brown called [persimmon], and iron glaze (tetsuyu), which produces a candy color. Because the coloring is done with stone or old iron powder, the pottery is characterized by its heavy coloring and rugged texture. In recent years, potters of all ages have gathered to produce a wide variety of styles.
