Tsuboya-yaki, Okinawa's representative pottery, was opened in 1682 under the policy of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and while influenced by China, Southeast Asia, Korea, and Satsuma, it has produced pottery suited to Okinawa's climate. After the war, Jiro Kinjo, Okinawa's first Living National Treasure*, played a central role in the revival of Tsuboya Pottery. He created his own unique style by incorporating techniques from other kilns into the Tsuboya pottery tradition. Even today, the kilns of Jiro Kinjo and his family continue to produce pottery using Okinawan clay and traditional glazes and techniques. The generous touch, reliable technique of pottery making, and the beauty of daily use as miscellaneous utensils have been passed down to the present day.
