| Shimane Prefecture* Iwami shimenawa, Ise shime-awa rope, close decoration. Shimane Prefecture is home to Izumo Shrine, famous for the largest shimenawa in Japan. It is made using only rice straw (ancient rice) carefully grown without pesticides* and organically in the Iwami region located in the west of the prefecture. [The traditional shape of the rope is based on the wish for good health and good fortune. It is customary at Izumo Shrine and in Shimane Prefecture to display the thicker end of the rope on the left side as you face it (generally, the thicker end is on the right side). Please enjoy decorating it however you like.
