The exhibition looks back on their 25 years of "avant-garde" activities by presenting approximately 180 works and 200 materials such as photographs and direct mail.
In 1948, soon after the end of World War II, Kazuo Yagi, Tetsuo Kano, Hikaru Yamada, Misuke Matsui, and Osamu Suzuki formed the avant-garde ceramic artists' group Souryosha. This book was produced in response to an exhibition focusing on the first 25 years of their 50-year activity.
At a time when the values of society were greatly shaken, these young potters were able to make pottery objects independent as contemporary forms. Furthermore, the International Exhibition of Contemporary Ceramic Art (1964) provided an opportunity for the members of the Souryosha group to become aware of international ceramic expression and to change their avant-garde style. This book contains approximately 180 works by artists of the Shikoukai and other avant-garde ceramic artists who were active in the movement at the same time as the Shiryosha. The book also includes a chronology and over 200 photographs and exhibition directories from that period. The book looks back over the 25 years that Soryosha ran and considers what kind of presence the company had in the movements of its time.
