Austria has a long history of winemaking, and although there have been many twists and turns, today, many high quality wines are produced under thorough quality control and high environmental awareness. The great advantage that differentiates Austrian wines from those of other countries is the individuality of the vineyards and the variety of grape varieties, which are the result of the diversity of terroirs. Another major characteristic of Austria is that 70% of the vineyard area is planted to white grape varieties. The focus of attention is the ongoing classification of first growth vineyards included in the single vineyard category. These and other essential aspects of Austrian wine, such as region, grape variety, and wine method, are also explained in detail.
