*A4 clear file, Shiko Munakata [Gokisho Dai-Benzaiten Gohonzon Zu] * Shiko Munakata, 1974 (Collection of Yamatoatomuseum) Shiko Munakata Born in Aomori between 1903 and 1975. Moved to Tokyo to study printmaking with the aim of becoming a Van Gogh artist, and at around the age of 23, began to pursue printmaking. He participated in the folk art movement after winning a prize at the 5th National Painting Competition, and produced woodblock prints with a strong indigenous style inspired by Buddhist scriptures and Japanese mythology, which were highly acclaimed internationally. His representative works include "Yongsaren suru Onnagatachi" and "Nibodhi Shakyamuni Buddha's Ten Great Disciples". |

Shiko Munakata

棟方志功(むなかた しこう)
明治36〜昭和50年(1903〜1975)、青森生まれ。ゴッホを目指して上京、23歳頃に版画を志す。第5回国画会入選を期に民芸運動に参加、仏典や日本神話などから着想を得た、土着性の強い木版画を制作し、国際的にも高く評価された。代表作は『湧然する女者達々』『二菩提釈迦十大弟子』。
