He moved to Tokyo to study under Van Gogh, and at the age of 23, he began to pursue printmaking. He participated in the folk art movement after winning a prize at the 5th National Painting Competition, and produced woodblock prints with a strong indigenous style inspired by Buddhist scriptures and Japanese mythology, which were highly acclaimed internationally. His representative works include "Yongsaren suru Onnagatachi" and "Nibodhi Shakyamuni Buddha's Ten Great Disciples". |

Shiko Munakata
Born in Aomori between 1903 and 1975. He moved to Tokyo to study under Van Gogh, and at the age of 23, he began to pursue printmaking. 棟方志功 昭和31年（1956） 棟方志功版画美術館蔵
棟方志功（むなかた しこう）
明治36〜昭和50年（1903〜1975）、青森生まれ。ゴッホを目指して上京、23歳頃に版画を志す。第5回国画会入選を期に民芸運動に参加、仏典や日本神話などから着想を得た、土着性の強い木版画を制作し、国際的にも高く評価された。代表作は『湧然する女者達々』『二菩提釈迦十大弟子』。
