This book introduces caricatures that offer spontaneous laughter and humor, with a focus on comical paintings and caricatures by ukiyoe artists and painters such as Katsushika Hokusai, Toshusai Sharaku, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Kawanabe Kyosai, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Kobayashi Seichika, and Utagawa Hirokei, who gained popularity during the Edo and Meiji periods. 美術作品のなかには「笑い」をテーマにして、姿や表情のおかしさ、まじめな絵巻物や物語絵のストーリー表現の滑稽さを描いたものが多数あります。本書では、江戸時代から明治にかけて人気を集めた葛飾北斎、東洲斎写楽、歌川国芳、河鍋暁斎、月岡芳年、小林清親、歌川広景たち浮世絵師や画家の滑稽画や諷刺画を中心に、ほとばしる笑いやユーモアが楽しめる戯画を紹介しました。また、戯画に登場する人物に台詞を付けることで絵の内容を一段と理解できるような演出も行っています。
