Jakuchu Ito

Born in Kyoto between 1716 and 1800. He studied the Kano school while working for the family's wholesale store for green goods, but at the age of 39, he handed over the reigns of the family to his younger brother, and began to devote himself to painting. While studying the ancient paintings of the Yuan and Ming dynasties and the decorative paintings of the Korin school of Japanese and Chinese painting, he also worked on sketching plants and animals, and was particularly good at painting chickens. He was called "a painter of strange ideas" because of his unique painting style. His best-known works are his "dynamic plant paintings.
