While offset printing, a common printing method, expresses colors and shading with a density of small dots, collotype expresses them with continuous gradation, allowing for more realistic and precise detail, similar to that of photographs. Kawase Hasui Born in Tokyo between 1883 and 1957. Studied Japanese painting under Kaburaki Kiyokata. Under the influence of Ito Shinsui's "Eight Views of Omi," he began making prints and pursued "new prints" while using traditional Ukiyo-e techniques under the guidance of printmaker Watanabe Shozaburo, and produced landscape prints with a rich travel sentiment. His representative works are "Twenty Scenes of Tokyo" and "Twelve Scenes of Tokyo. |

Kawase Hasui

川瀬巴水(かわせ はすい)
明治16〜昭和32年(1883〜1957)、東京生まれ。鏑木清方に日本画を学ぶ。伊東深水の『近江八景』の影響で版画制作に取り組み、版元渡邊庄三郎の元で、浮世絵の伝統技法を用いながら「新版画」を追求し、旅情豊かな風景版画を生み出した。代表作は『東京二十景』『東京十二題』。
