グラフィック、彫刻、テキスタイル、さまざまなジャンルを統合し、人間の身体に一番身近なデザインとしての「服」を表現メディアとするデザイナー・三宅一生。日本の 衣服文化の基礎を継承しつつ、新たな「かたち」を発見・創造し、率いるチームとともに最先端の技術や繊維を研究した新素材の開発によって、まったく新しい服を発表し 続け、「人々に感動や喜びを与える、快適な日常のためのものづくり」を行ってきた。
2016年3月、国立新美術館(東京)で「MIYAKE ISSEY展: 三宅一生の仕事」が開催された。本展は初期から最新プロジェクトに至る仕事を通して、「ものづくり」に対する三 宅一生の考え方やデザインアプローチを明らかにするものである。
公式図録兼書籍である本書は、展示される「服」をすべてフォトグラファー岩崎寬が撮り下ろしている。また、吉岡徳仁の「グリッド・ボディ」インスタレーションや、関口 光太郎のアートワークとのコラボレーションなど斬新なヴィジュアルが展開する。本書は三宅一生の主な仕事を知ると同時に、その魅力を根本から再発見する一書である。 デザイナー・三宅一生の「ものづくり」は、「デザインが現代社会にいかに貢献できるか」という絶え間ない未来への問いにあふれている。
