Description
Ditty bags were manufactured by the American Red Cross and were primarily issued to wounded soldiers sent to hospitals and to the crews of sunken ships. The bags contained the bare necessities of personal hygiene items such as razors, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and handkerchiefs, as well as envelopes, letterhead, socks, etc. The bags were also available in a variety of shapes and sizes, including drawstring bags, drawstring sacks, and sock bags. The bags came in a variety of shapes, including a drawstring bag, a drawstring bag with detachable straps, and a bag that could be used as both a drawstring and an apron, as well as a variety of fabrics, including olive-colored HBT and twill fabric supplied by the military and canvas fabric collected through donations. The aprons were produced by female volunteers from the Red Cross chapters in each city, and the labels include the Red Cross mark, the name of the American Red Cross, and the name of the city where they were produced. The type that could be used as both a drawstring and an apron was popular with soldiers because it was convenient to use as an apron when shaving and to take in and out of the apron. *Bags*. |
