Description
The National Treasure [Birds, Beasts, and Humans Caricatures] is a picture scroll depicting anthropomorphic animals, reflecting the world of the Heian* Kamakura period (1192-1333). Its free and joyful style has been called Japan's first manga, and it is also considered the originator of modern manga and animation. Two of the most popular and playful scenes, "Monkey Chasing" and "Sumo," have been made into a handkerchief. The reverse side is made of pile and has a soft texture. Caricatures of Birds, Beasts, and Humans... This is a picture scroll on paper with ink painting, which is a national treasure and has been handed down in Kozanji temple in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto. It depicts animals and people in a caricature-like style, reflecting the state of the world at the time. The most famous of these scrolls is the Koumaki, which depicts anthropomorphic figures such as rabbits, frogs, and monkeys, and depicts scenes of games such as playing with water, betting on bows, and sumo, memorial services, and fights. There are various theories that anthropomorphic animals were used to satirize humans, or that they were caricatures of annual events. |
