Description
*Nepal's representative percussion instrument The madal is a typical Nepalese percussion instrument. It is cylindrical in shape with a slightly bulging center and has a double-sided percussion surface, one side producing a high sound and the other side a deep, low sound. When playing, the nepal is placed on the lap in a sitting position, and both sides are played horizontally. The striking surface is covered with goatskin and, like the Indian tabla, is covered with a black paste made of rice flour, iron powder, etc. This black paste weighs down the surface. These black parts give weight to the striking surface and make the tone distinctive. The antique-looking wood with goatskin pasted on it has a solemn, atmospheric texture that makes it very attractive for interior decoration. |
