It is said that a kyusu, a teapot made of pottery, grows as it is used and brewed many times. Karatsuyaki, a pottery produced mainly in the eastern part of Saga Prefecture and the northern part of Nagasaki Prefecture, has a history of more than 400 years, and during the Edo period (1603-1867), it was so widely known in western Japan that people called all pottery "karatsumono". In the world of the tea ceremony, Karatsuyaki is also renowned as a masterpiece, and is referred to as "Ichiido Niraku San Karatsu" by Sen no Rikyu and other tea masters.
