今ではバリの名産品として大変有名なアタ籠ですが、一番初めはバリ島東部のトゥンガナン村で作られたものです。このトゥンガナン村に住んでいる人たちはバリアガと呼ばれるバリに元から住んでいた人たちで、いわばバリの原住民。現在は塀のように囲ったムラの中で生活し、機織りやアタ籠を作って暮らしています。
バリのアタ籠の発祥の地だけあって、クオリティが一番いいのもこの村のアタ籠。バリの中心部からは車で一日以上かかり、簡単にはいけない場所ですが、だからこそ時間がゆっくりと流れ、クオリティを重視しながらの昔からのモノづくりができるのでしょう。
