This Mino ware is made in the Toyo cauldron in Shimoishi-cho, Toki City, Gifu Prefecture.
Shimoishi Town is known as a potter's town in the Mino region. The history of the pottery industry in this district is long, beginning in the Heian period.
In the Muromachi period (1336-1573), the influence of Buddhist culture from China led to the production of Buddhist ritual utensils, and in the Momoyama period (1573-1573), the town produced tea ceremony utensils such as Shino, Kiseto, and Oribe, which were rich in artistic value.
In this town of potters, skilled craftsmen who have inherited traditional techniques and sensitivities from the Heian period (794-1185) make Jizo statues one by one by hand with their hearts.
