Description
These bags were made by the Rabari tribe to hold and deliver gifts and other items during their wedding ceremonies. Since these bags are one-of-a-kind, sizes and embroidery patterns are assorted. The Rabari people live widely in the northwestern Indian states of Rajasthan and Gujarat, as well as in the Sindh province of Pakistan. They used to be nomadic herders of camels, goats, and sheep, but are now becoming more sedentary. When the men went out to graze, the women took care of the house and spent much of their time doing needlework to support their clothing lifestyle, resulting in beautiful embroidery. Embroidery was applied not only to costumes, but also to house wall decorations, bags, and other furnishings, as well as to livestock ornaments. These items served as dowries for marriages. The mirror work of the Rabari varies from round*triangular*rhombic to more abstract patterns. |
