The E5 Series was developed to operate at a maximum speed of 320 km/h on the Tohoku Shinkansen, and began commercial operation on March 5, 2011. It is positioned as the successor to the E2 Series and is currently the main train of the Tohoku Shinkansen. In 2011, when it started operation, the maximum speed was 300 km/h. In 2013, the maximum speed was increased to 320 km/h, which is the fastest among Shinkansen trains in Japan. It was also the first Shinkansen train to offer the "Grand Class," which has facilities that are superior to those of the Green Car. The catch copy when it first appeared on the market was "MADE IN DREAM. The first train was a 10-car train. The production cost per train (10 cars) is approximately 4.5 billion yen, and it received the Blue Ribbon Award from the Japan Railfan Club in 2012. JR Hokkaido introduced the H5 Series, based on the E5 Series, for the Hokkaido Shinkansen, which opened on March 26, 2016.
