梵字とは仏教、とくに密教と密接な結びつきがあり、古代サンスクリット語の基礎にもなっている文字で、各仏菩薩たちをあらわしています。そして『生まれ年（干支）』によって決まる『守護尊』をあらわしたものを守護梵字といいます。この8種類の梵字にはそれぞれ1文字で御仏の功徳をあらわすとされ、干支の守り本尊とされています。
