本書を手にされた皆さんは、
きっと『試合に勝つためにはどうすればいいのだろう』
という思いを持たれていると思います。
しかし日本の武道の中でも、
とりわけ剣道においては、
試合に勝つことが目的ではないと言われます。
それには私も同感です。
試合で勝つことだけを目的として
剣道をしているわけではありません。
そもそも試合とは、
文字通り『試し合い』だと私は思うのです。
練習して修得してきたものをどれくらい出せるか、
あるいは修得してきたものがどの程度通用するか、
弱気になっていないか、
気持ちで負けていないかなど、
そのときの自分の技術や精神を
相手と『試し合う』機会であるということです。
試合に勝てれば、修得してきたものが
間違いではなかったと確信できるはずです。
そして、さらに技や精神に磨きをかけ、
さらなる高みを目指すきっかけとなるでしょう。
もし負けてしまったら、その原因を考え、
その後の練習に活かす絶好の機会となります。
試合に勝つことは、勝つことが最終目的ではなく、
いま言ったように、自らをさらに高みへと
誘うための手段なのだと私は思います。
