Description
*[Amabie] is a traditional Japanese yokai. It is said to have caused light to shine from under the sea and other phenomena, and to have made prophecies concerning good harvests, pestilence, and other matters. *During the Edo period* in the third year of the Koka Era (1846), a mysterious monster appeared from under the sea in Higo (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture). Its overall appearance was that of a mermaid, but it had long hair and a bird-like beak on its face. *When the official was startled, the specter said, "I am Amabie, and I will travel around the country for the next six years. I will bring about a bountiful harvest in all the land for six years from this year. If there is an epidemic, show my copy to the people as soon as possible. *The plague would have been quickly dispelled if Amabie's painting had been shown to the people. Wear this bracelet to ward off disease and pestilence. |
