Description
*Reduced folding screen [National Treasure: Pine Trees] by Hasegawa Tohaku*. Hasegawa Tohaku, Azuchi-Momoyama period, Tokyo National Museum Pine forests hidden in the haze are depicted with bold, unrestrained brushwork. This is Hasegawa Tohaku's masterpiece, and is a masterpiece of early modern ink painting. Tohaku's "Pine Trees," in which he describes his ideal as "a quiet painting," invites the viewer to enter a Zen-like state. For this reason, this work is very popular overseas, and is also a very popular gift or souvenir from overseas. *What is a collotype*? While offset printing, a common printing method, expresses colors and shading with a density of small dots, collotype expresses them with continuous gradation, which makes it possible to express them with fine details that are closer to the real thing, as in a photograph. Tohaku Hasegawa Born in Nanao, Noto (Ishikawa Prefecture) from 1539 to 1610. Founder of the Hasegawa school. At first, he mainly produced Buddhist paintings, but later went to Kyoto and became devoted to Sesshu. Studied Sung Yuan painting and the Makigyo style, and developed his own style of painting centering on ink and wash paintings. His representative works are [National Treasure: Pine Trees], [Enko (Monkey) with Dead Tree], and [Chishakuin Golden Heki painting]. |
