*Shrinking Screen Painting by Shimomura Kanzan [Important Cultural Property, Weak Buddhist Priest]*

1915, Tokyo National Museum

This work was exhibited by Shimomura Kanzan at the Second Restoration Inten Exhibition and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Modeled on the noh song "Weak Master," it depicts Shuntoku Maru (Weak Master) worshipping Nissoukan (the falling sun) and wishing for the Pure Land. It symbolically represents the view of the Pure Land as seen by Weak Master with his mind's eye.

This folding screen is popular among foreign visitors because of the Japanese style of the gold ground and the sun rings.

Shimomura Kanzan

Born in Wakayama between 1873 and 1930. Under the guidance of Okakura Tenshin, he contributed to the modernization of Japanese painting by utilizing classical painting techniques such as Yamato-e, Rimpa school, and Sung-yuan painting.
