*Shrinking Screen Painting by Shimomura Kanzan [Important Cultural Property, Weak Buddhist Priest]* 1915, Tokyo National Museum This work was exhibited by Shimomura Kanzan at the Second Restoration Inten Exhibition and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Modeled on the noh song "Weak Master," it depicts Shuntoku Maru (Weak Master) worshipping Nissoukan (the falling sun) and wishing for the Pure Land. It symbolically represents the view of the Pure Land as seen by Weak Master with his mind's eye. This folding screen is popular among foreign visitors because of the Japanese style of the gold ground and the sun rings. Shimomura Kanzan Born in Wakayama between 1873 and 1930. Under the guidance of Okakura Tenshin, he contributed to the modernization of Japanese painting by utilizing classical painting techniques such as Yamato-e, Rimpa school, and Sung-yuan painting. 下村観山が第二回再興院展に出品した作品で、重要文化財に指定されています。謡曲『弱法師』をモデルに、俊徳丸(弱法師)が日想感を拝む(落日を拝んで浄土を願う)姿を描いています。弱法師が心眼で見た浄土の景色が象徴的に表現されています。
金地に日輪が日本的であるとして、海外の方から人気の高い屏風です。
下村観山(しもむら かんざん)
明治6〜昭和5年(1873〜1930)、和歌山生まれ。岡倉天心の指導のもと、やまと絵・琳派・宋元画などの古典的な絵画技法を生かし、日本画の近代化に貢献した。代表作は『重文 弱法師』『木の間の秋』。
