Statue of Hel, Norse Goddess of the Underworld [Hel (Hel, Hela)] Goddess in Norse mythology who rules over the land of the dead due to old age and disease. She lives in a mansion called Aeluznir. The Old Norse Hel is derived from the Germanic *khalija, meaning "to hide," and from the Indian *khalija, meaning "to hide," which is the origin of the word. Kel-, meaning "to hide" or "to keep secret. It shares the same etymology as the English word "hell. In the [Gyurvi Haburat] of the [Prose Edda], Loki is said to have had a son with the giant Angleboza, and Fenrir and Jormungandr are her brothers. Some say that Loki ate Angleboza's heart, transformed into a female giantess, and gave birth to Hel himself [2]. Hel was banished by Odin to Niflheim, a remote place like her brothers.
