Heian period, Lent by Kozanji temple.
The back of the washi paper is decorated with a modern image of caricatures of birds, beasts, and human figures, expressed in a gentle manner using the watermarking technique, with solid colors on the back. It can be used both horizontally and vertically as there are no ruled lines. The two colors, warm and cool, can be used by men and women of all ages.
* Introduction of the work *
National Treasure [Caricatures of birds, animals, and humans], Heian - Kamakura period, Lent by Kozan-ji
This is a picture scroll consisting of four scrolls, A, B, C, and D. The first scroll is a caricature of anthropomorphic figures. Scroll A is the most popular among the four scrolls, as it depicts anthropomorphic animals in a spontaneous manner. The author of the scroll is said to be the Toba priest Kakuyu (1053-1140), but there is no proof, and various theories exist. Recent research has revealed that the order of the paintings has been changed since the original. It is thought that this is because they were originally divided into two volumes and then joined together.
