Amish quilts have been made as bedspreads and mats with beautiful stitching and brightly colored geometric patterns. The Amish (Old Order Amish), known for their horse-drawn carriages, lack of electricity, and simple lifestyle, came to North America more than 260 years ago in search of religious freedom. The quilts they made became known as "Amish quilts" and are collected.
This book tells the story of their quilts, their way of life, and the relationship between quilts and the community in which no one is left behind.
The color frontispiece features eight pages of quilts and household items that appear in the book. In the black-and-white text, the delicate stitches of flowers and fruits are enlarged and reprinted for easy reference. The book also introduces the history of the quilters and the birth of their various groups, showing their various quilt designs, their names, their relationship to daily life, and the materials used. It also traces their life course, including education, military service, adulthood, marriage, and care for the elderly, and shows examples of how they have been developed for the community. On the other hand, it also introduces an aspect of their efforts to expand their interactions.
(This book was written based on the content of the exhibition [Visit Amish* Quilts - People Living There and Around the World] held at the National Museum of Ethnology from August 23 (Thursday) to December 25 (Tuesday), 2018).
