Recent advances in life science, such as DNA genome analysis and electron microscopy (cryoEM), are revealing the three-dimensional structures of proteins involved in life phenomena one after another. This has led to a dramatic increase in the opportunities to understand life phenomena as chemical reactions, and thus the title of this book [Life Science Changes!] and this book is intended to help readers understand [three-dimensional structure] and [function] of proteins in a single volume.
This information is expected to make it possible to collect accurate information in a shorter time from literature and the Internet when consulting with a doctor about treatment of diseases, using health foods to maintain good health, or growing pesticide-free vegetables.
In Chapter 1, we will overview the wonder of [being] alive from the overall picture (central dogma) of how proteins are formed using DNA information. Readers who are familiar with these contents are encouraged to skip this chapter and move on to Chapter 2.
In Chapter 2, we will attempt to understand [the basic knowledge and general laws for understanding life phenomena chemically and quantitatively as much as possible], focusing on the biomolecules, especially proteins, that make life possible. In addition, equilibrium reactions among chemical reactions will be introduced.
In Chapter 3, the three-dimensional structure of protein molecules, the processes of formation and breakdown of the structure, and the stability of the formed structure will be understood, making use of Chapter 2.
In addition, the relationship between equilibrium and rate of chemical reactions will be introduced.
In Chapter 4, we will show how information on the overall enzymatic reaction can be obtained by analyzing the reaction of an enzyme molecule within a protein molecule in the steady state (reaction between the enzyme and the substrate at low concentrations). Along with this, examples of the use of equilibrium and rate, introduced in Chapter 3, will also be presented.
In Chapter 5, using the information from Chapters 2 to 4, we will introduce [how far we have come in understanding the three-dimensional structure and molecular function of enzyme proteins] and [what is not understood], using actual examples and making them as general as possible.
The group of proteins working throughout the cell that are the subject of Chapter 6 are the unique proteins described in Chapter 5.
In the Appendix, we introduce a method for analyzing the function (activity) of enzyme molecules. If the combination of the enzyme molecule and the substrate molecule is a world first, the experimental result will be a new discovery.
Throughout the book, we hope to develop life science research by summarizing the [general laws that have been discovered so far] related to protein molecules and by informing readers of [interesting phenomena that are still in the process of being discovered, but will become general laws in the future].
