[The middle of the Heian period (794-1185) was a time when many of the classics that are familiar to us today, especially Heian literature, such as The Pillow Book and The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari), were written. This was the period when the Heian culture, represented by the so-called "juni-hitoe" (twelve-layered kimono), flourished. The buildings called "shinden-zukuri," the color scheme of attacks, and the loose-fitting silhouettes of costumes are the images of the Heian period that many people imagine, and are sometimes mentioned in classical classes.
But what were the aristocrats of the Heian period actually like in their daily lives, and how comfortable were their beautiful costumes? What were the aristocrats depicted in the picture scrolls like? Of course, they were people just like us. They go to the bathroom and eat. They were sometimes sick, and sometimes they were healthy and enjoyed sports. A thousand years ago, people just like us were working, studying, eating, and falling in love.
In this book, various scenes depicted in picture scrolls of the Heian period, such as [The Tale of Genji Picture Scroll] and [Picture Scroll of Annual Events], are reproduced with photographs that make them seem as real as possible. The Jouka-in picture scrolls are woven around the life of the mysterious Heian aristocrat [Jouka-in], including his service to the Imperial Court, playing kemari, glimpses of his wife, working and relaxing, etc. The pictures are designed to give a realistic picture of the Heian people and their culture.
